Duke’s Legendary Letter To Michael Jordan After He Chose Their Rival School

2 Min Read

Michael Jordan had a terrific tenure with the North Carolina Tar Heels before making it to the NBA and becoming arguably the best player of all time. MJ was a sought-after prospect before making his decision to attempt the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. He was looked at by other universities, including UNC’s biggest rivals, Duke, led by legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski.

At the time, Duke was pushing to persuade MJ to play with them, but His Airness had different plans. He ultimately decided to join North Carolina and the rest, as you know, is history. Jordan was a great piece for UNC, having outstanding performances and even winning championships. Things would have been different for them if MJ made another decision and went to Duke. The Blue Devils have been used to get some of the best prospects in college in recent years but that time it wasn’t like that.

However, they knew how to take the L and handled it the best way. After letting them know he wasn’t interested in joining them, coach K sent him a letter showing his disappointment for not getting him on board, but wishing him the best of lucks in his career.

Dear Mike:

I am sorry to hear that you no longer have an interest in learning more about Duke University, however I do want you to know that my staff and I wish you the very best in your college career. You are a fine young man and you should make an immediate impact on whatever you choose.

Take care, and best of luck.

Sincerely,

Mike Krzyzewski

This was a great gesture from a great coach and man. Krzyzewski would coach MJ eventually when they attempted the 1992 Olympics with the Dream Team. However, that was nothing compared to develop the great Jordan when he was in college.
