The Sacramento Kings had a phenomenal season that saw them end a 16-year playoff drought with the third seed and a seven-game first-round series against the defending champions, Golden State Warriors.

The Kings’ lack of experience was glaring against the Warriors, as well as having a center that could stop Kevon Looney from averaging 13.1 rebounds. Dwight Howard can be an answer for both situations and lobbied the Kings to bring him back to the NBA for 2023-24. He told Mark Haynes of the Sacramento Observer that he wants the Kings to take a look at him for next season.

“I’m not retired from the NBA just yet. I would love to help the Sacramento Kings contend for a title. Even though I believe their team is pretty much set… I like Mike Brown. I think he’s an amazing coach, and what he accomplished this year was very impressive.”

Howard has been playing in Taiwan for the last season and is hoping to ink an NBA return for 2023-24. The Kings wouldn’t be a bad option, even if Howard was coming on as a veteran. He last played for the Lakers in 2021-22 and averaged 6.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks in 16.2 minutes per game. Mike Brown coached Howard on the Lakers for a few games in the 2012-13 season before being fired.

Should The Kings Consider Dwight Howard?

The Kings currently have two proper centers on their roster, All-Star Domantas Sabonis and benchwarmer Richaun Holmes. Holmes was unable to get major minutes under Mike Brown last season, with the Kings electing to have smaller lineups throughout the season where they relied on Sabonis as the biggest player on the court. That wasn’t good for their defense, especially rim protection.

Howard on a minimum contract seems to be a pretty low-risk deal. There is mostly just upside, as the Kings get to add one of the most experienced players in the world to a roster that still is developing. His lack of mobility would definitely impact the playing time he will actually receive, but he could be a valuable veteran voice on the bench.
