The NBA decided to shake up the way they do awards at the end of the regular season by renaming every single existing award after a legend that defined it. In addition, the NBA also added a new trophy that recognizes the player that is the most clutch throughout the NBA season.

The MVP award has been named after Michael Jordan, the Defensive Player of the Year is named after Hakeem Olajuwon, Rookie of the Year is named after Wilt Chamberlain, Sixth Man of the Year is named after John Havlicek, and the Most Improved Player has been named after George Mikan. The newly introduced Clutch Player of the Year is named after Jerry West.

Fans had some hilarious reactions to the new awards list.

Recognizing greatness by naming iconic trophies after the players that defined the game is a great move. While the new ‘clutch’ trophy will generate some serious debates, it will quantify an attribute we have been giving to players for years now.

Will The New Awards Bring Any Other Changes?

With the new award designs, many will wonder whether this is a sign of some actual changes in the voting process in the NBA. As far as we can tell, for now, everything else remains the same outside the trophy designs.

The race for awards this season will not be affected in any way except by the trophy the eventual winner will hold. Hopefully, this can further establish actual voting patterns as history remembers the winners that held the trophy and not the trophy itself.
