  • Michael Cooper, a 5-time NBA champion and former DPOY, revealed one of Dennis Rodman’s defensive tactics
  • Cooper claimed that Rodman would wear lipstick and he wasn’t afraid to put it on his opponents during the game
  • Michael Cooper said Dennis Rodman was the only player who could defend all five positions in that era

Dennis Rodman was a two-time Defensive Player Of The Year in his career with the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls. Michael Cooper, who won five championships with the Showtime Lakers, faced off against Rodman in the late 1980s, and he opened up on The Worm’s defensive prowess and some of his more unique strategies.

“The one thing about Dennis, if there was anybody back then in that era, that played all five positions defensively, Dennis was the only one who could do that,” Michael Cooper said on the BTM Legends Corner podcast in 2020.

“He could guard Magic, he could guard shooting guards… His best asset was guarding threes, fours, and fives. Dennis was tough and didn’t mind sticking his nose in there and getting it knocked off…

“Or he didn’t mind wearing lipstick, getting a little lipstick on your shoulder. Dennis was just a beast… Dennis Rodman was a different kind of individual… I swear, he would dress up. He had lipstick and he didn’t mind putting a little on you…”

Wearing lipstick sounds par for the course for Dennis Rodman, the man once wore a wedding dress and announced he was marrying himself.

It is a bit odd that he did this during NBA games, although it makes sense when one factors in what Dennis Rodman was like as an individual.

Dennis Rodman’s Accolades Show He Is One Of The Greatest Defenders Of All Time

Dennis Rodman was never much of a scorer, it’s everything else he did on the court that made him so great. Apart from being a 2-time DPOY, he was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team seven times, and the All-Defensive Second Team once.

He is also pound-for-pound, the GOAT of rebounding. Despite being 6’7, Rodman led the league in rebounding seven times. His approach to rebounding was scientific, with Isiah Thomas explaining how Dennis Rodman perfected that aspect of his game.

Michael Cooper was Defensive Player Of The Year himself. So he knows exactly what he’s talking about when it comes to Rodman’s defense. The lipstick beat is unique to Rodman, but the rest of it goes to show he was one of the greatest defenders ever.
