Former NBA roleplayer Evan Turner has made many controversial takes about Giannis Antetokounmpo in recent years. He evaluated Giannis’ game during the Bucks’ 19-point win over the Knicks and said he understands why he is a successful player but wouldn’t include him in his top five right now.
“I saw Giannis last night and Buddy kept it player and showed me a lot through his speech (pause) and confidence in who he is. Buddy actually got a championship mindset, you can see why he’s successful. I still don’t have him in my top 5, but I can respect greatness.”

Giannis is averaging 30.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists this season, somehow finding a new level of his play to continue carrying the Bucks on his shoulders. Even with the offensive help of Damian Lillard next to him, Giannis is still the primary difference-maker on the Bucks.
Dame is leading the team in clutch time, but Giannis is doing everything he possibly can for all the other minutes of the game, including taking greater defensive responsibility after the losses of Jrue Holiday and Grayson Allen in the summer.
There is a clear top five in the NBA this season with Giannis definitely in it. Tim Bontemps’ official ESPN straw poll for MVP candidates landed Giannis in third place so far this season, ahead of Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but behind Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid.
Evan Turner Has Criticized Giannis Antetpokounmpo Repeatedly
Evan Turner’s comments on Giannis fall flat more often than not, as he’s shown a pattern of always trying to discredit the Greek Freak. He recently mocked Giannis for his game-ball fiasco, claiming he set the Bucks’ franchise record for points as well as goofiness.
Turner went out of his way to mock Giannis during the offseason, claiming nobody wanted to come to Milwaukee and work out with him after Giannis himself revealed he doesn’t like working out with other active NBA players. It extends to non-basketball criticisms as well, with Turner once saying Giannis was too much of an attention seeker to walk away from the game and live a quiet life after retirement.
There is some anti-Giannis sentiment that Turner harbors, made even more clear by his refusal to include the former two-time MVP in his top five of players in the NBA right now.
Giannis has run laps around the career achievements of Turner, who was still in the league when Giannis had come in. Maybe the unfulfilled potential of Turner’s career compared to the success of Giannis’ is a spot of bother for the former No. 2 overall pick. At least he’s started to recognize what Giannis can achieve, though it may take the Greek superstar more time to completely win Turner over.
