Former NBA player Von Wafer was recently asked to reveal his weirdest experience from his time in the league, and he shared an incredibly bizarre story.
“This day I just happen to be in my room and get a knock at the door,” Wafer said on his I’ll Just Ask Myself podcast. “So I’m like, ‘That’s weird, let me see.’ So I looked at the peephole, I couldn’t believe who it was who I saw.”
Van Wafer stated he wouldn’t reveal who the player was as he didn’t want to ruin any reputations. He then explained what that teammate of his did.
“When he comes in the room, he got this weird look on his face,” Wafer continued. “… He picks up the remote, goes through the TV, and finds a video on there… As he goes through, he goes to the Porno section. I’m like man what, he trying to order this, so this will show up in my room.”
Wafer tried to stop his teammate but to no avail.
“He continues to go through it and he orders a Gay porn, then walks out the room,” Wafer added. “… I don’t really don’t understand this type of stuff. I don’t know if it’s serious or what. I’m thinking it’s a joke.”
Thinking it was just a prank of sorts, Wafer jokingly told his teammates about it, and it didn’t go well.
“I’m like, ‘Yo, this dude came in my room and ordered a Gay porn, and walked out.’ So I’m laughing, but everybody else went dead silent,” Wafer stated. “And they were looking at me like I was weird.”
The 38-year-old started being treated a bit differently in certain situations after that and he realized he made a mistake by saying it out loud. He had embarrassed a teammate in front of everyone and to make matters worse, it was the star of the team.
“This person is very famous and one of the superstars on the team,” Wafer said. “And that wasn’t a good look. The way that everyone reacted is as though it was a secret that I didn’t know. That was one of the weirdest situations in my basketball career.”
(starts at 3:26 mark):
Wafer says he has no idea if that player was actually gay and he felt he accidentally might have let everyone on the team know about it. That would have been a really awkward situation and Wafer clearly doesn’t want to make the same mistake as he did back then, by revealing who that individual was.
Von Wafer Played For Seven Teams In Six Seasons In The NBA
Wafer was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 39th pick of the 2005 NBA Draft, but he was waived during his rookie year. He would then have stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics, and the Orlando Magic, after which he played overseas and in the G League.
Considering he played for so many teams, you have a fairly large pool of players to pick from. There is one name, though, that does come to your mind thanks to recent events, and that’s Dwight Howard. Wafer and Howard were teammates on the Magic during the 2011-12 season, and while I’m not saying by means that he’s definitely the one that was being talked about here, it’s easy to draw that conclusion.
Dwight Howard Did Not Want To Speak About His Sexuality
For a few years at this point, there has been speculation about the eight-time All-Star being gay. He had always denied that was the case, but the recent sexual assault allegation on Howard has strengthened the claims regarding his sexuality.
Howard denied the sexual assault allegation and said everything was consensual, but admitting that meant he consensually did the act with a man. It has led to the topic once again coming to the forefront, but unsurprisingly, it isn’t something he wants to talk about.
Howard refused to answer if he’s gay during an interview and stated that what he does in his personal life is nobody’s business.
