  • Gilbert Arenas averaged 27.7 points per game in his prime with the Washington Wizards
  • He was criticized for being selfish and recently explained why he still wouldn’t pass to his teammates
  • Gilbert Arenas said he had teammates who would be clubbing 7 times a week, among other reasons for not trusting them with the ball

Gilbert Arenas was only a 3-time All-Star in his NBA career, but for those three years, he had an argument to be considered the best scorer in the league. This often got him criticized because his Washington Wizards teams never won much, and he was deemed to be selfish. Arenas explained his side of the story recently.

“We get killed in the media for how we come across,” Arenas said. “And I’ll tell the media, ‘You calling me selfish cuz I won’t pass, you never asked me why I won’t pass.’

“Ask him why he won’t get the ball. He know why he won’t get the ball. He club 7 days a week. He club 7 days a week and you think I’m going to pass him the ball. Hell naw.

“You telling me I’m the ball hog but you not asking me why I’m the ball hog. I come to the gym and shoot 3-4-500 shots. He ain’t doing any of it. He’s selfish for trying to do this.”

Gilbert Arenas’ Wizards got into the playoffs every season from 2004-05 to 2007-08, but they never finished above 5th in the Eastern Conference. He averaged 5.7 assists during that time, but it was never quite enough. His teammates weren’t the best of the best or anything, either, so it makes sense that this is his take on the subject.

The Washington Wizards Locker Room Was Quite Toxic At The Time

Even though they had an elite star in Gilbert Arenas and players like Jerry Stackhouse in the locker room, the Wizards never won more than one playoff series. And part of it was because of how toxic the locker room was. Gilbert Arenas once revealed how Jerry Stackhouse destroyed Kwame Brown because he wanted the ball more than he was getting it.

The situation would get even worse eventually when Gilbert Arenas and his teammate Javaris Crittenton had their fateful disagreement leading to a gun incident. Those teams needed better players for sure, but the mix of personalities in there meant it was never going to work out for them.
