It is safe to say it has been a disappointing time at the helm for Doc Rivers with the Philadelphia 76ers so far. He was brought in to help the team take that next step in the playoffs, but Doc has failed to live up to those expectations so far.

After a stunning defeat to the Atlanta Hawks in the Conference Semifinals last year, the Sixers bowed out at the same stage to the Miami Heat this time around and Doc has taken a lot of flak for their shortcomings. Gilbert Arenas was the latest to take a shot at him during the “No Chill with GIlbert Arenas” podcast:

“It’s those gimme championships that solidify some of these coaches. I’m like wait hold on, he (Doc Rivers) was a losing coach before you gave him rockstars and then he won a championship, now his legacy is built on a championship. Ya’ll value championship… after he won a championship, what did he do after that? Nothing. What has he done since then? Nothing.”

“If Elton Brand ever did an interview….. and he tells the truth, ask him what I said. I said when he decided to get Doc, I said Doc is going to ruin that team and Ben Simmons is going to be out of there, because he doesn’t know how to coach him.”

Arenas claimed that he and Elton Brand spoke on a lot of things, including coaches as well as trades and that Brand consulted with him because he does research. It’s unlikely Brand is ever going to respond publicly to this, but if Arenas actually did say it, then his prediction aged like fine wine.

Since Doc got there, Ben Simmons demanded to be traded from the team, in part, perhaps due to Doc’s comments after they were eliminated by the Hawks and there have been questions raised on if he is the right man for the job. GM Daryl Morey has stated that Rivers will return as the coach but he is definitely on the hot seat at the moment.
