Golden State Warriors Will Discuss New Multi-Year Contract With Draymond Green This Simmer

Since punching Jordan Poole before training camp, the future of Warriors veteran Draymond Green has been shrouded in uncertainty.  As a valued member of the main championship core, he has been essential to their success over the years. But he can also be a liability at times, thanks to occasional outbursts from the 4x champion.

Still, despite much speculation about whether or not the Warriors would bring him back on a new contract, it seems the team is set to re-commit to his future with a multi-year deal.

“Lacob has a thirst for titles and the front office has again been reminded this season of Green’s indispensable value in that quest. Lose Green and likely lose any realistic path to that ultimate goal,” wrote The Athletic’s Anthony Slater. “It’s why the Warriors intend to discuss a new multi-year contract with Green, either via an opt-in and extend or an entirely new deal after an opt-out, sources briefed on the matter tell The Athletic. Green has leverage: He is expected to have multiple playoff-contending teams in pursuit if he enters the open market. But Green and the Warriors appear intent on discussing an extension to their partnership if the price is right. He just finished his 11th season with the franchise.”

Green isn’t the type of player to put up 25 points in a game, but he is somebody who can make a difference on both ends of the floor thanks to his versatile defense and offensive playmaking abilities.

Draymond Wants To Be A Warrior For Life

Green, 33, is likely to land at least one more deal with the Warriors, but there are other teams who would jump at the chance to trade for him. Plus, with new financial limitations, it’s entirely possible that the Warriors get outbid by another team.

Fortunately, Green has already been vocal about his intentions.

“As I’ve told you guys, for years, I want to be a Warrior for the rest of my life,” said Green. “I wanna ride out with the same dudes I rode in with. And I think we’ve put the work in to make that happen and here we are with our worst season as a whole since 2014 and yet, we had a chance to make another run. It’s never as bad as it seems, it’s never as good as it seems…”

The ball is in the Warirors’ court now. If they want to keep Green around for the final stretch of his career, they know what must be done. And after all he has done for that franchise, he has more than earned a healthy pay raise.
