Ime Udoka had a sensational debut season as a head coach in the NBA, leading the Boston Celtics to the 2022 NBA Finals. Unfortunately, Udoka was suspended and later removed from the role for off-court issues.

The Athletic’s Kelly Iko has revealed that Udoka will be interviewing for the Houston Rockets head coaching job on Wednesday.

“The Houston Rockets will interview Ime Udoka for the franchise’s head coaching job on Wednesday, sources tell @TheAthletic. Udoka was suspended by the Boston Celtics prior to the 2022-23 season for violations of team policies.”

Udoka had an improper relationship on the Celtics, and his misconduct was serious enough for the Celtics to cut ties with the coach that just led them to the NBA Finals. Udoka’s assistant and new head coach Joe Mazzulla has done a great job in his first year as a head coach as well, with Udoka now possibly headed to the Western Conference.

Is Udoka A Good Fit For The Houston Rockets?

The Rockets need to push toward contention from next season onwards, especially with the 3 years of extreme tanking that the franchise has done. A top-3 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft would be extremely valuable, and they already have a solid core of young players in a well-balanced roster.

Udoka demands discipline from his players, and this Rockets’ team needs to add that. Veterans that have gone through the team like John Wall and Eric Gordon have had issues with the immaturity of the roster. Stephen Silas couldn’t establish good habits among the players but now Udoka could get a shot at doing the same.

The Rockets are expected to do a relatively extensive search, so we may be waiting till the offseason for an update on who is taking the role.
