After going down 3-0 to the Heat, there wasn’t much faith that the Boston Celtics could come back to win the series. At the time, they looked like a team that was broken, fractured, and ready to begin an offseason of uncertainty.
And yet, somehow, the Cs showed some fight and responded in a huge way, winning not only Game 4 but also Games 5 and 6 to tie the series at 3-3. It’s hard to pinpoint one singular moment that changed this Celtics team, but a trip to Topgolf was definitely a moment of unity for the team that has played a role in their turnaround.
“Horford told Mazzulla to ditch the film session, organizing a team trip to Topgolf instead. They needed to have fun with each other and feel the joy again. ‘We completely skipped film,’ Grant Williams told The Athletic. ‘We kept basketball away and we just focused on each other and getting that camaraderie and team back. We disconnected from the actual pressures and we were able to just enjoy one another. We’ve done movies before, we’ve done dinners. But that was our first time doing something active like that. Then we hit the film the next day.'”
Before pulling out a win in Game 4, reports were saying that the Celtics were a team that was tired of fake liking each other and it really seemed like major changes were coming in some form.
You have to give the Celtics credit for not only refusing to give up against overwhelming odds but choosing to trust each other amid difficult times.
Will The Celtics Win Game 7?
Jimmy Butler and Erik Spoelstra practically guaranteed a Heat victory on Monday night, but it remains to be seen if they can pull it off in such hostile territory. Right now, the Celtics are playing like a team with everything to lose, and they have seemingly found their stride at the right time.
For the first time since early this season, Boston is playing at their ceiling, and it’s got the whole world on notice.
Of course, it will all mean nothing if they lose on Monday, but even in defeat (at the very least), the Celtics can at least take comfort in knowing they gave it everything they had.
