The Miami Heat made a Cinderella run to the NBA Finals this season, which was unexpected by the majority of fans. Though they weren’t the most talented team in the playoffs, their defense, grit, and discipline were out there for everyone to see.
One of the key players for the Miami Heat during their Finals run was guard Max Strus, who is highly regarded due to his 3PT shooting. He will be a free agent this summer, and it is quite likely that he’ll get a big deal from a team with cap space. In fact, NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that the Indiana Pacers could offer Max Strus a three-year, $48 million deal.
“Multiple rival clubs indicated Wednesday that Strus is increasingly likely to command a contract that starts higher than the full $12.4 million midlevel exception for non-taxpaying teams when free agency legally begins Friday at 6 PM ET.”
“And one of those teams, league sources say, has revealed itself.”
“Sources tell The Stein Line that the Indiana Pacers, who are projected to have more than $30 million in salary cap space, are strongly weighing a three-year offer for Strus in the $48 million range.”
There is no doubt that this is a huge contract for a role player like Max Strus. It is unlikely that the Miami Heat would be able to offer him that kind of money given the salaries they already have on the roster, but we’ll see what happens in the future.
During the 2022-23 regular season, Max Strus averaged 11.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 2.1 APG for the Miami Heat, while shooting 41.0% from the field and 35.0% from 3PT range. He could be a good addition to the Indiana Pacers, and it’d be interesting to see how he does next to a playmaker like Tyrese Haliburton.
The Los Angeles Lakers Were Previously Floated As A Destination For Max Strus
Previously, an NBA executive suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers are a team that should sign Max Strus. The Lakers have a lot of free agents at both guard positions, and if they can’t retain them, Max Strus would be a great option.
“They should be smart and go for multiple players. Role players, guys like (Max) Strus, or bringing back Josh Hart and maybe going for Gary Trent (Jr.) if he opts out in Toronto. Strus will be a bargain next year, even though he’s been good in Miami, he will be undervalued,” the executive said.
It remains to be seen if the Lakers do end up landing Max Strus. The Indiana Pacers can offer him a bigger deal due to them having more cap space, but if Strus values being on a contending team, then the Lakers are a good destination.
