The Minnesota Timberwolves have a challenging offseason rebuild ahead of them, as the team looks to reshape their team into a contender without moving one of its three main stars.
Changes in the rotation are afoot, as forward Taurean Prince saw his $6 million team option declined by the Wolves today. The sad part is that Prince found out when Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted the news and not from his team or agent.
Sheesh, appreciate the heads up Woj🤲🏾 https://t.co/KXwlYfMyLA

We have heard stories of players getting traded without prior notice, which can still make sense given the fast-moving nature of trades. A team option being declined is wild, as the team should have intimated the same to Prince or his agent before leaking the news. We have seen agents fired by players for less, so Steven Heumann, Richard Beda, and Dave Spahn of CAA may have some egg on their faces.
Prince averaged 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 54 games played for the Wolves after signing with the team last season.
The Timberwolves Are Re-Tooling On The Fly
Even though rumors of a possible Karl-Anthony Towns trade have been floated around, it seems unlikely that the Wolves will move on from their franchise star of eight years this summer. Anthony Edwards‘ is expected to emerge as the new No. 1 option of the team, so the team may need another season before they can commit to one player or the other.
KAT averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 29 played games last season while Edwards averaged 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 79 games and led them to a playoff win over the eventual champions in the first round.
The Rudy Gobert trade will haunt the franchise, as most of their future trade assets belong to the Utah Jazz now. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year has minimal trade value after a disappointing debut season with the Wolves, averaging just 13.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks. His contract makes him have negative value one season after he was traded for multiple first-round picks and players, along with the draft rights to Walker Kessler, who averaged more blocks (2.3) than Gobert as a rookie.
Losing players like Prince and not being able to replace them could harpoon the franchise further, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do after free agency starts.
