Isiah Thomas Clapped Back At Gilbert Arenas For Saying The Detroit Pistons Had Advantages Over Other Teams In The Late 80s

Isiah Thomas went off at Gilbert Arenas for saying the Detroit Pistons only won their championships because they had advantages over the other teams.

Isiah Thomas has been talking about the Detroit Pistons teams of his era quite a bit recently. They won two consecutive championships in the 1989 and 1990 seasons, earning themselves a lot of notoriety thanks to their rough style of play. And while no one can deny their greatness, Gilbert Arenas recently suggested that the teams won largely thanks to some advantages they had over others, which Thomas responded to.

“You didn’t compete with Larry and Magic, you didn’t. They ran the 80s,” Gilbert Arenas said. “You had a two-year window, which let me remind people, you had an advantage over everyone in those two years. See no one knows the Detroit Pistons were the first team to have their own private plane. So the two years that they actually won, the year they got the private plane, they won a championship.”

Isiah Thomas naturally wasn’t the biggest fan of this and he hit back on Twitter, saying, “My brother Gilbert Arenas with all due respect we @DetroitPistons and I played against and beat Magic, Kareem, Bird, and Jordan. We also made it possible for you and the rest of your brothers to now travel on private planes and stay in 5-star hotels. Let it be known.”

Isiah Thomas’ comments have made it clear that he doesn’t feel like they get enough respect for the things they accomplished in the NBA. And some of the bad reputations did take away from their greatness. But being the only team with a private plane when everyone else is flying commercial is an advantage for sure, the Pistons were pioneers for being the first team to start that trend in the league.

Isiah Thomas Said The Pistons Were The Only Team To Beat Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, And Michael Jordan When They Were MVPs

One of the things that makes the Pistons so impressive is that they did take on some of the NBA’s biggest legends in their primes. And Isiah Thomas doesn’t want people to forget that, which is why he recently brought it up.

“When we beat them, they were all MVPs of the league. Magic was the MVP of the league. Jordan was MVP of the league, Bird was MVP of the league when we beat them.”

It would seem that there are a lot of unresolved feelings about the Detroit Pistons for people that were on the team and those looking in from the outside. The only thing that cannot be denied, though is the hardware, and Isiah Thomas and the Pistons have 2 shiny trophies.
