22-year-old Ja Morant has proven to be one of the best and brightest young talents in the game. In his sophomore season, he led the Grizzlies to the playoffs after averaging 19.1 points, 7.4 assists, and 4 rebounds in 63 games.
Morants’ season came to an end when the Grizzlies got defeated by Utah in Round 1, and it’s been relatively quiet for the young stud ever since.
Until today, of course, after his chat with Hoops Hype’s Michael Scotto went viral online.
In it, he discussed his thoughts on where he ranks among the best guards in the NBA. He named himself among that group, along with Steph Curry, Chris Paul, Damian Lillard, and Russell Westbrook.
Scotto: Where do you feel you rank among the top point guards in the game?
Morant: Top 5.
Scotto: If you’re Top 5, who else is there with you?
Morant: Steph (Curry). I’m a big Chris Paul fan. I’d say Dame (Lillard) and (Russell) Westbrook. It’s tough. The point guard position is so loaded. Some guys have to get left out.
It’s obviously a controversial take, but not a very surprising one. It’s expected for franchise players to carry a certain degree of confidence, and Morant is no exception.
The thing is, he could easily become a top-five guard (or higher) in the future. Between his amazing scoring abilities, natural leadership, and top-tier playmaking, the guy has plenty of potential to blossom into a true superstar, a true legend.
In fact, that’s exactly what he’s aiming to be.
Scotto: What are your long-term career goals?
Morant: Multiple All-Stars. I want to be an MVP. Win championships. I want to be in that conversation when it’s all said and done to be considered with the greatest to ever play this game.
With just two seasons under his belt, Morant isn’t anywhere close to being in All-Time conversations. But a day might come where he gets there.
It really just depends on what he’s able to do, and how he’s able to play, over the course of his promising career.
