Jayson Tatum is proving that he is the frontrunner in the 2022-23 MVP award race after a stellar showing against the Los Angeles Lakers to end a 2-game losing streak.

Tatum scored 44 points as the Celtics pulled out an incredible OT win over the Lakers, with both teams blowing massive leads over the course of the game. Tatum hit the clutch bucket to send the game to OT and then finished the job there alongside Jaylen Brown.

Tatum is a leading contender to win the Michael Jordan MVP award and openly spoke about how he views himself in this league.

“I feel like I am the best player when I step onto the court but there’s great players in this league man. I know I got my work cut out for me. I am trying to take it one game at a time, keep winning, keep building, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Tatum’s case would have taken a massive hit if the Lakers ended up winning the game. But he ensured the Celtics had a chance by sending it to OT, where the Lakers just didn’t put up a fight.

The Leading Contenders In The MVP Race

Through the first 2 months of the season, there are 3 very obvious candidates that stand out above the rest. Tatum is the leader right now, but Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t far behind. The Bucks have a comparable record to the Celtics and could very well be the No. 1 seed at the end of the season.

The other contender is Luka Doncic, who’s having the best individual season in the NBA. However, he is on a Dallas Mavericks team that has been underachieving this season, hurting his case when compared to Tatum and Giannis. It’s going to be a tight race and JT just took a big step forward with this win.
