Jerry West has long been known by his most popular nickname, ‘The Logo.’ West’s silhouette is on the NBA’s official logo and has been since his playing days.

A lot of NBA players would love to receive an honor like that, and many players have suggested that Kobe Bryant could be next. But when the man himself was asked about it, he had a very blunt response.

“Hypothetically, if Adam Silver gave you the opportunity to pick who should be the next logo…” Paul George said to Jerry West. He responded, “I would never do that. It’s disrespectful to other players.”

That’s a very interesting take from Jerry West, most people would be incredibly proud to be used as the logo for a massive entity like the NBA. But he is cognizant that one player being picked above the others can cause issues. It makes one wonder if he’s been at the receiving end of any hate from other stars of his era for being chosen as the silhouette that became the logo of the league.

The modern NBA is a lot different from what it used to be, but it’s hard to imagine that the logo will be changed anytime soon. It would cause a lot of debate and might make a lot of people angry, so perhaps it is best to stick with what is done and keep West’s likeness there. The 14-time All-Star averaged 27.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 14 seasons with the Lakers and won a championship, he surely deserves it.

Jerry West Revealed What The NBA Logo Was About

What makes all this even more interesting is that on the same podcast, West went on to reveal how he became the logo. And the story isn’t exactly an amazing one.

“You have any idea what the logo was about? It was about marketing. I think the late Walter Kennedy… The league had started to grow. And that’s when they decided to market the league. And that thing has been around forever.”

A lot of people forget at times that the NBA is ultimately a business. Everything is about growing it and getting the most money possible for the owners. So it’s no surprise that the logo was also about that, and it does make it seem like less of a pure honor.
