The 1st overall pick from the 2015 Draft Class, Karl-Anthony Towns has kicked off his draft class’ contract extension by being given a $224 million supermax contract that will start with the 2024-25 season. The same was reported by Adrian Wojnarowski, saying that KAT’s total contract value right now is 6-year, $295 million.

KAT has been well worth the investment for Minnesota, leading the franchise since he was drafted in 2015. A few seasons with injury issues and a very challenging personal time in his life from 2020 onwards have created roadblocks, but KAT has emerged through it all. He played in the Playoffs for only the second time in his career this season and had a 60-point game in the 2021-22 season.

Minnesota has a young co-star in Anthony Edwards who is entering just his third season in the league. There are other pieces on the roster that are making the future of the Timberwolves look bright. No matter what happens, KAT is going to make almost $300 million in the next 6 years.

The Timberwolves need to make moves to keep up with the rest of the West and stay in playoff contention. Their only signing on Day 1 of free agency has been Kyle Anderson from Memphis. They have trade assets that they can flip, which would include a 2015 draft classmate and close friend D’Angelo Russell.

Russell is in the last year of his contract and will earn over $30 million this year. With it being an expiring deal and the Timberwolves still having draft assets, maybe a move can be made on that front to better help the guard play on the squad?

KAT has committed to being a Timberwolves player through his prime, as this contract will end with Towns being over 30 years old. This is the championship window that Minnesota need to target, or else they may find themselves trading him away a few years down the line.
