The Los Angeles Clippers suffered an embarrassing 122-91 loss against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night, dropping their record to 21-19, ranking 6th in the competitive Western Conference.

Things were so bad for them that Tyronn Lue benched the starters way before the end of the game, but that decision didn’t sit well with the team’s superstar. Ty Lue is one of the best head coaches in the NBA, no doubt about it, but this time, his decision was criticized by his best player.

Kawhi Leonard hardly ever makes controversial statements, but after Thursday night’s game, the forward had some things to get off his chest regarding his head coach and that interesting decision he made.

Kawhi Leonard Sounds Off On Tyronn Lue’s Late-Game Decision Against Nuggets

Following the game, Leonard made some comments about that call, saying that he would have taken a different direction to see if the players reacted against adversity and could come back on the scoreboard.

Via The Athletic:

“I mean, obviously nobody wants to lose by that amount of points,” Leonard said. “You want to get it back, pretty much. You want to get back out there on the floor and do what you can to either get a win or even the same night, rather than sit and watch. Just coming from me.”

Leonard went deeper and, in doing so, conveyed a difference in philosophy with Lue about how he would have approached the second half. Basically, Leonard isn’t so quick to “burn the tape.”

“I feel like these are the times where we need to be in there and dig ourselves out those holes and learn what we’re doing, instead of flipping the page and going to the next game,” Leonard said. “But yeah, that’s just from my perspective.”

The Clippers have been called a ‘sleeping giant’ recently, but they need to wake up if they want to take over and destroy their opponents. Kawhi is trying to get back to his best form, but yesterday wasn’t his best game, so it’s easy to see why Lue took him out of the game.

After almost four years together in Los Angeles, Leonard and Paul George are yet to deliver a title, and they need to develop chemistry if they want to aspire to win it all this season. Perhaps a trade could help them, but that doesn’t seem to be on the table right now.
