Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Kendrick Perkins were all teammates with the Boston Celtics, and they even won a championship together in 2008.
While Perkins was the starting center, he was very much a role player on a team where Garnett and Pierce were the superstars. And KG once told the hilarious story of how the big man got put in his place by The Truth.
“Perk was like, you know, Perk trying to be a good guy. He like, ‘Hey man, let’s keep swinging the ball, let’s keep swinging the ball.’ P (Paul Pierce) wasn’t swinging the ball so he goes, ‘Okay P, you gonna just shoot everything, P? You don’t see me there open or whatever?’
“And when Paul over it, when P get over it. For everyone who don’t know Paul Pierce, and you ever see Paul Pierce look up to the sky and he over it… He probably touching his chin, he about to come with some sh*t. But you probably wanna get the hell out of there. That’s your warning. You got about 5 seconds to get out of there.
“P was like, ‘Motherf**ker, I shoot this motherf**ker every time down. You just get the rebound.’ So Perk reenacted it for me and Perk say, ‘Okay that’s how we talking to each other now? Okay P, I gotchu. Cool.’”
Considering that Paul Pierce was the star on the team averaging over 20 points per game, and Kendrick Perkins averaged about 7 points per game, it’s easy to see why he went off like that. But whatever their differences, they all worked those out together to ensure that they won a championship in 2008, which remains the last time the Celtics claimed the NBA title.
Kendrick Perkins And Paul Pierce Have A Complicated Relationship
Kendrick Perkins and Paul Pierce haven’t had the easiest of relationships, both are known for being quirky and strong personalities in their ways. And that has manifested itself in things like Pierce taking a shot at the way Perkins is built while trying to make fun of the Los Angeles Lakers.
For his part, the big man has been quite complimentary of his former superstar, like the time he defended Pierce from a fan that said Jayson Tatum has surpassed his legacy. A lot of figures on that legendary Boston Celtics team had problems with one another, but the only thing that matters is that they won it all in 2008 and became champions.
