Kobe Bryant believed he wasn’t the greatest Los Angeles Laker of all time. He reserved that praise for former franchise icon, Magic Johnson.

“I grew up watching Magic, and I’ve learned so much from him,” Bryant said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I can’t say that I’m the greatest Laker ever, to me he is. To keep it real with you, I’ve stolen so much from him, that my game wouldn’t be complete without him!”

This certainly shows the modest side of the Black Mamba, who had an illustrious 20-year NBA career. The shooting guard was a phenomenon playing all his years in the league with the Lakers, and winning all of his laurels with them.

The five-time NBA champion, two-time finals MVP, and 18-time NBA All-star were one of the greatest-ever players to play the sport, but his humility was on full display when he credited Johnson for his success. Such has been the contribution of these stars that they find themselves tied first in our Lakers Goat pyramid.

Right before Kobe Bryant’s unforgettable final game of his career in 2016, Magic Johnson lavished praise that was thoroughly deserved.

“He has played through injury, he has played hurt, and we have five championships banners to show for it. For the last 20 years, this man has been the biggest and greatest celebrity we have had in this town. He is not only a great sports icon but also the greatest to wear the purple and gold.”

It’s a classic game recognizes game, really. Johnson and Magic may have played in different eras, but what they truly were, were bonafide superstars.
