Kyrie Irving made the headlines on Friday night after he decided to burn sage before the Brooklyn Nets game against the Boston Celtics. Given the rival, given how Kyrie left them and knowing that it was his return to the TD Garden, this was unnoticed and everybody was talking about Kyrie’s curious pre-game routine.

After the game, the point guard talked with the media and explained what was behind that ritual. Kyrie explained the meaning behind it and claimed that as long as every team in the league allows him, he will do the same during the regular season.

“It just comes from, you know, a lot of native tribes, being able to sage, just cleanse the energy, you know, make sure that we’re all balanced. And we come into this job and we come to this place it’s not anything I don’t do at home that I did today. You know, I saged last game, and I plan to sage almost every game if the opposing team would allow me to. But literally, it’s just more or less for us to stay connected and for us to feel great about us going to work and feeling safe and provided for from our ancestors.”

It was something curious for the rest of the people but not for his teammates. Kevin Durant also talked about Irving’s ritual and explained that he probably does that before doing the tiniest activity at home.

“That’s his thing,” Durant said. “I mean, Ky probably sages his room before 2K at home. So, that’s just what he does and I think that gives us good energy. He does that in the locker room. That’s his thing and we all respect it and we respect his methods. He comes down and plays really hard for us.”

The Nets beat the Celtics with a 113-89 final score, with Durant going for 25 points and Kyrie adding 17 points with seven rebounds. This team is ready to do big things and led by their star duo, the Nets look very dangerous.
