Kyrie Irving Says The Nets Need More Pieces If They Want To Compete

Without Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving struggling with his own injuries, the Brooklyn Nets are 8th in the East with an 18-22 record overall. While optimism remains both about the rest of the season and the next few seasons to come, Irving doesn’t think his team has enough to compete at the level they want to.

Here’s what he said to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps:

“I mean, it’s transparent,” Irving began. “It’s out there, it’s glaring, in terms of the pieces we need in order to be at the next level.”

“I feel like we have great pieces, but it’s pretty glaring that we need one more piece or two more pieces that will [complement] myself, KD, DJ [Deandre Jordan], GT [Garrett Temple], Spence[r Dinwiddie], Caris [LeVert], and we’ll see how that evolves.”

On paper, the Nets have one of the deepest rosters in the league. Joe Harris, Jarrett Allen, and Wilson Chandler are all very good pieces for the team, yet all were excluded from Kyrie’s list of players.

It’s hard to say whether or not Kyrie is intentionally trying to exclude them, but it’s not a good look — to say the least.

Kyrie has had problems in the locker room before, in both Cleveland and Boston right before he forced himself out.

But maybe Kyrie should wait for KD’s return before he starts calling out his team.
