Just a couple of weeks ago, it felt like no team in the league could stop the Brooklyn Nets on any given night. They strung together a winning streak of 10+ games and dominated every opponent. The reason behind this success was the dynamic duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

After a rough start to the season, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving played beautiful basketball consistently and pulled the Brooklyn Nets out of the mud. Just when things were going well for the Nets, they were handed troubling news in the form of Durant’s MCL injury.

The Nets struggled to fill in the gap left by KD initially, as they lost four consecutive games. But behind Kyrie Irving’s insane 48-point night, they finally stopped the bleeding against the Utah Jazz. On top of that, Kyrie and the Nets rode on that high morale against the Golden State Warriors as well.

Kyrie Irving’s Strong Message About Assuming The Role Of The Number One Option Until Kevin Durant Returns

In an extremely exciting game between the Nets and the Warriors, Kyrie Irving was once again the hero for the former. Kai finished the game with 38 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists. He was easily the best player on the court in this particular matchup, and NBA fans loved seeing Irving lead the team to a second consecutive win.

Following the statement victory, Irving was asked about his thoughts on becoming the team’s number one option until KD returns, and the 30-year-old gave a brilliant response to the question.

“I told you guys that I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to be the first option or the second option or the main one. This is just a message for everybody at home: first option, the second option, third option, they don’t f*****g matter to me. It doesn’t matter who has the ball in their hands as long as they’re being aggressive, and it’s the best shot for our team. The objective of this team sport is to win basketball games; not identify one person to carry everybody every single night. Some nights it’s gonna occur like that or seems like that. For me, it’s the team attitude, team atmosphere, and living the results with us playing together and collectively.”

Irving has made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t care about individual brilliance. Instead, he wants the entire roster to play like a well-oiled machine, and that’s what the Nets have been doing over the last few months. If they can continue playing at this level, they will definitely become one of the frontrunners to win the 2023 NBA Championship.
