Mike Malone, despite winning an NBA championship with the Denver Nuggets this past week, had made headlines for his jabs against LeBron James. Malone and the Nuggets swept the Lakers, but the media attention given to the Lakers seemingly sparked a fire in Malone, and he hasn’t stopped taking jabs at LeBron since. But fans are wondering if this beef goes way back.
Los Angeles Lakers fans on Reddit questioned whether the beef between LeBron James and Mike Malone dates back to Malone’s stint as an assistant coach at Cleveland between 2005 to 2010, during LeBron’s first stint with the Cavaliers. Most fans seemed to be unhappy with Malone’s recent comments, deeming them unnecessary.

Malone has been going after LeBron James for quite some time, since the Western Conference Finals. It is interesting that Malone has chosen to antagonize LeBron James, especially considering that James defended Malone when the Sacramento Kings chose to let him go in 2015.
LeBron James Finally Responded To Malone’s Comments
During an interview with Pat McAfee, Malone took a shot at LeBron contemplating retirement after getting swept by the Nuggets, joking that he was going to consider retiring after coaching a team to the NBA championship. Malone’s comments were the latest in a string of jabs taken against LeBron.
James has never been shy about responding to those who come after him and did the same last night, calling out Malone and the Nuggets in an Instagram post for their repeated shots against him. James clearly took exception to the comments made by his former assistant coach.
Despite Malone’s bragging about stopping the Lakers, LeBron James put up excellent numbers against the Nuggets, averaging 27.8 points, 10.0 assists, and 9.5 rebounds in 4 games in the 2023 Western Conference Finals. With these comments, James will be extra motivated the next time the Nuggets play the Lakers.
