- Lamar Odom admits to seeing Kobe in his dreams despite fatal 2020 crash
- Odom says Kobe told him the afterlife is overrated
- Lamar is unsure of the meaning behind dream Kobe’s strange message
The height of Lamar Odom’s career was undoubtedly his 7-year run with the Lakers. While Odom never blossomed into a true superstar, he played a fairly significant role in their championships during 2009 and 2010 alongside Kobe Bryant. But while Odom may have won with Kobe, he also claims to have one-on-one chats with the legend in his dreams.
In an episode of Club ShayShay, the former Sixth Man of the Year revealed some details behind his chats with Bryant, who passed in 2020:
“He just looked back to me and said, ‘[Lamar], the afterlife ain’t what people make it up to be.’ I was like oh s**t, I woke up and I didn’t know how to take that like, what did he mean,” said Odom. “He missed the girls? His mission is not done yet? Get it all in now because you don’t know what to expect but that just stuck with me…”
Odom did not elaborate any further on the visions, but it wouldn’t be unlike Bryant to be unimpressed with the afterlife. Renowned for his mental strength and perseverance, Bryant was the type of type to expect more out of all situations. He was never satisfied.
This hunger drove his career, which is what led to Bryant becoming an 18x All-Star, 15x All-NBA player, 5x champion, and 2x scoring leader. His “mamba mentality” often rubbed others the wrong way, including his superstar teammate Shaquille O’Neal, but it also helped to bring out the best in others and it’s how he found success after Shaq left LA in 2004.
Eventually, Bryant linked up with Pau Gasol, Derek Fisher, and Lamar Odom, and they won back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.
Why Was Kobe Hated During His Career?
Considering how Bryant is remembered today, it can be hard to believe that Bryant was a controversial figure of his time. As dedicated and passionate as he was, his attitude didn’t make many friends and he often alienated himself from his teammates and fellow competitors.
Lamar, while not perfect, understood Kobe and his relentless drive to win. It’s why Odom played for the Lakers as long as he did and why he was able to enjoy so much success following Bryant’s lead.
Today, it seems Odom is still hearing messages from Kobe when he goes to sleep at night, but that’s not what is keeping his legacy alive. His career accomplishments, his family, and the countless stories of his amazing perseverance are what we will remember about Kobe, and that’s probably the way he would have wanted it.
