- LaVar Ball has always had high goals for his sons
- LaVar revealed he started training them before they were even 10 months old
- Lonzo and LaMelo have made it to the NBA while LiAngelo plies his trade in the G League
LaVar Ball wanted to ensure his sons were destined for greatness, so much so that he started training them even before they were 10 months old. During an interview with Vlad TV, LaVar shared details on how he trained Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo Ball.
“I’ve been training them boys since they been two years old,” Ball said. “All my boys probably trained before 10 months. You talk about some training, talk about some athletic training. I gave them the ‘Ghetto Olympics.'”
LaVar turned their home into a practice arena of sorts for his kids.
“What I mean by that, in my living room I didn’t have no couches and stuff,” Ball continued. “I had a table, let them jump off the table and see if they can land on that mat without falling down. Catch some passes. I make them jump off the stairs… you can’t hurt yourself, we got padded mats down there, but everything was competition.”
At least there were padded mats or else the three of them would have seriously gotten hurt. LaVar also had them hang on pull-up bars to see who would drop first. It was a very competitive environment for them to grow up in, and they seem to have pushed each other to get better.
LaVar Ball’s Training Worked
I am personally not the biggest fan of LaVar and a lot of his antics, but you can’t deny that the man did ultimately succeed in his goals. It’s not easy to become a good NBA player, and two of his sons, Lonzo and LaMelo, accomplished it.
LaMelo became an All-Star in 2022 with the Charlotte Hornets and if not for injuries, Lonzo could have become one as well. LiAngelo has fallen short, as he has never played an NBA game, but he does play for Greensboro Swarm in the G League.
There’s no shame in that, as the NBA is the best basketball league in the world. Only so many make it big there, and all three brothers doing it would have been nothing short of a miracle.
LaVar Ball Spoke About Why He Only Averaged 2.2 Points Per Game In College
If there is one thing LaVar certainly accomplished, it is that his kids became far better basketball players than he ever was. Ball had started his college basketball career at West Los Angeles, but then transferred to Washington State, who were playing in Division I.
He didn’t have a lot of success there, and LaVar had an interesting explanation for why he only averaged 2.2 points per game in college for them. The 55-year-old blamed the coaches for a defensive-oriented approach and claimed they did not want to play him.
LaVar then transferred to Cal State Los Angeles in Division II, where he played alongside three of his four brothers. After that, Ball shifted his focus toward football and in 1995, managed to make the practice squad of two NFL teams, the New York Jets, and the Carolina Panthers. He never played an NFL game, though, and injuries later ended his career as a professional athlete.
