The Lakers vs. Pacers In-Season Tournament Final was an incredibly competitive matchup where the Lakers emerged victorious. Pacers’ Bruce Brown and Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell have history from the 2023 Playoffs, as Brown was on the Nuggets team that swept the Lakers after a heated series.

Russell and Brown shared words on the court on many occasions during the game, with a social media user releasing the audio of what the pair were saying to each other.

D’Angelo Russell: “N**** talk too much”

Bruce Brown: “I can talk, swept y’all a** last year”

D’Angelo Russell: “Walk your a** down”

Bruce Brown: “Watch when I come back”

D’Angelo Russell: “Come back and shoot them out of the game”

Russell ultimately outplayed Brown by dropping 13 points and seven assists on the night. Brown, who was given a two-year, $45 million contract by Indiana in the summer, had a disappointing night with four points, playing only 19 minutes and being benched in favor of Bennedict Mathurin, Aaron Nesmith, and T.J. McConnell.

D’Lo is averaging 16.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists this season, sliding into the role of the third star on this Lakers roster. While players like Austin Reaves have great games from time to time to outperform Russell, the expectation of consistency from a veteran player like Russell is much higher. He struggled badly against Brown in the 2023 Playoffs but got his revenge in this game.

D’Angelo Russell Blasts Bruce Brown For Only Trash-Talking With Nikola Jokic Behind Him

D’Angelo Russell brought the energy from the court into his post-game press conference. Instead of relishing the $500,000 bonus and winning an NBA trophy for the first time in his career, Russell went off on Brown, essentially calling him a front-runner who didn’t want to trash-talk Russell without Nikola Jokic on his team.

“He was talking s–t all year. Yeah. Talking s–t all year. For me, it was just showing it with my play. I don’t have nothing to say to him. I’m a fan of him to be honest,” Russell told Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times. “This was just all on the court. Got something to say? Show me on the court. [Nikola] Jokic ain’t there next to you today. It’s different.”

Jokic is the kind of player that would back up a lot of trash-talk from a role-player. But the Nuggets took facing the Lakers personally because people were overshadowing them to talk about the Lakers’ miracle run to the Western Conference Finals. Given what Michael Malone had to say about the Lakers, Brown was likely feeding off the energy of his coach and franchise at the time.

People are not happy with Russell for his quotes given he’s on a team with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, so he has two superstars who can back him up if he talks trash to someone else. While that’s true, Russell doesn’t have a reputation for going and trash-talking his opponents, especially since he returned to the Lakers.

The Lakers and Pacers will face each other twice in the last week of March, so it’ll be interesting to see how this rivalry plays out over three months from now.
