Leaked audio recently surfaced of an incident during the game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors, where Victor Wembanyama could be seen arrogantly reacting to Dennis Schroder, who was trying to help him.

Dennis Schroder: “I was trying to help you out.”

Victor Wembanyama: “I don’t need your help.”

Wembanyama had slipped after Schroder faked a pass and the German came over to help the 19-year-old get up off the floor. The Frenchman, however, wasn’t interested in getting his opponent’s help and made sure Schroder knew about it as well.

This incident seems to have taken place toward the end of the first half and unfortunately for Wembanyama, things went horribly wrong for the Spurs afterward. They were leading 54-35 at the half, but the Raptors stormed back and managed to win 123-116 in overtime.

The Frenchman still ended up giving a good account of himself, though, finishing with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 5 blocks.

NBA Fans Reacted To The Wembanyama-Schroder Incident

When it comes to incidents such as this, they always tend to divide opinion and this one was no different. NBA fans had some very contrasting reactions to this viral clip.

One compared Wembanyama’s mentality with that of Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.

A fan says Wembanyama is already becoming a diva.

Wembanyama got praise from one fan.

Wembanyama appears to be quite stuck up for a rookie, one fan thinks.

A fan likes Wembanyama’s attitude.

I think it’s become pretty clear by now that Wembanyama isn’t interested in being friendly with everyone on the court. He is a fierce competitor and is a bit of an old soul, who just wants to win. He and the Spurs couldn’t get it done here, but these experiences will make them better in the long run.

Victor Wembanyama’s Impressive Start To Life In The NBA

There were a lot of expectations placed on Wembanyama heading into his rookie season, as he had been hailed as one of the greatest prospects ever. While some were skeptical of the buzz surrounding him, it hasn’t taken Wembanyama too long to show that the hype was justified, as he is off to a great start to life in the NBA.

The teenager is averaging 19.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.6 blocks per game, and looks set to have one of the better rookie seasons in modern NBA history. He has made quite an impression on Metta Sandiford-Artest, in particular, with the former Lakers star saying Wembanyama could win 10 NBA championships.

Artest also thinks the teenager could win MVP as a rookie, but that’s not going to happen. What could, though, is that he could be an All-Star this season. The last rookie to make the All-Star team was Blake Griffin in 2011 and while I had serious doubts about Wembanyama making it, it does seem like a real possibility at this point.

You could make an argument for him already being one of the best defenders in the NBA, and as he continues to improve on the offensive end, his case to make it in will just grow stronger. If he does end up playing well enough to earn a spot, it’d be a phenomenal feat.
