LeBron James’ Reunion With The Miami Heat Is Unlikely Because Both Camps Haven’t Forgotten How He Returned To The Cavs In 2014

LeBron James’ decision to join the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018 has been seen by many as one of the worst decisions of his career. He put his faith in a front office that has proven to be incompetent and the only saving grace is that they at least won a championship in 2020.

With another title being well out of reach at this point, there have been calls for LeBron to ask for a trade after the season and the Miami Heat have been touted as a potential destination. While joining the Lakers was one of his worst decisions, going to the Heat back in 2010 with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh might have been his best one. James went to the NBA Finals in all 4 of his seasons with the team, winning two titles in the process. While there were indications previously that both sides would be open to a reunion, NBA insider David Aldridge says that is not the case.

via The Athletic:

“You can’t categorically rule out a reunion someday, given the Heat’s eternal win-at-all-costs philosophy. There is enough quality on the Heat roster to make a deal with the Lakers plausible. But it seems unlikely. The details of why and how James left the Heat to go back to the Cavs in 2014 have not been forgotten by either camp.”

The exit was a bit messy and there were reports that Pat Riley had offered James a contract that was less than the max, which he promptly rejected. Time heals all wounds but Aldridge here is saying that both sides don’t seem to have forgotten about how things ended.

Erik Spoelstra Had Some Big Praise For LeBron James

Erik Spoelstra was, of course, the Heat coach back then as well and while his relationship with LeBron wasn’t the best at first, James came to respect him a lot. Spoelstra recently spoke of a regret he had from that time, stating that he wished he had the guts to play LeBron in all 5 positions because he would have been the best in the league in all of them.

Small ball wasn’t the norm back then like it is now and it would have been quite a bold move to play LeBron at Center. It could have worked though, as James was at his absolute peak when he was with the franchise.
