  • Giannis Antetokounmpo needs a new star in Milwaukee
  • Bucks could run the East with superstar tandem

As Damian Lillard talks heat up across the association, multiple teams are reconsidering their approach in the ongoing sweepstakes. One such team is the Milwaukee Bucks, who seem to be getting involved after months of silence from the front office. According to league insider Marc Spears, the Bucks are testing the waters on a potential trade that will pair Lillard with 2x MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“Blazers are continuing to talk to other teams,” reported Spears. “Where I’ve heard the likes of Chicago, Milwaukee, and even Philadelphia…”  The race for Lillard has really advanced over the past few days. With training camp looming, and the new season quickly approaching, the Blazers are running out of time to resolve this issue before opening night.

So far, the Heat have been unwilling to provide their best offer, and it’s left the door open for other teams (like the Bucks) to get involved. For now, Miami remains the frontrunner to acquire Lillard but things could change suddenly if the right offer is made. For the Bucks, they are not a team that’s desperate to make moves but they are undoubtedly feeling the pressure to make a move in the wake of their shocking first-round exit last season.

The Bucks Are On The Clock With Giannis

As a 7x All-Star and 2x league MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo has changed the game for Milwaukee. After spending most of their existence in mediocrity, the Greek Freak has brought the Bucks unprecedented success that includes a championship in 2021. Giannis, however, has made it clear that his desire to win has remained unchanged, and he is willing to move wherever he has the best chance to add to his trophy case.

“At the end of the day, I want to create new memories, I want to win a lot of championships,” said Giannis on his NBA future. “I’m a Milwaukee Buck, but most importantly I’m a winner. If there is a better situation for me to win the Larry O’Brien I have to take that better situation.” It remains to be seen if a “better” situation will present itself to Giannis, but the Bucks can increase their odds of keeping the superstar if they can build a team worthy of competing for a title. Getting Damian Lillard, whether he wants to be there or not, would be a great way to reset their standing with the 7x All-Star.

Damian Lillard Is The Perfect Co-Star For Giannis

On his own, Antetokounmpo has done a fine job leading the Bucks to prosperity. In each of the past five seasons, the Bucks have been near the top of the standings as one of the most consistent teams in basketball. Last season, despite the poor finish, the Bucks had the top seed in the East and were favorites to win the title for most of the season.

If you add Damian Lillard to the mix, it suddenly makes the Bucks infinitely more dangerous. With a whopping 32.2 scoring average last season, Lillard’s scoring and shooting ability will provide the perfect spacing for Giannis to work in the paint. Additionally, Lillard’s skills as a playmaker and distributor will create opportunities for role-players like Brook Lopez, Pat Connaughton, and Khris Middleton. Only time will tell if the Bucks can pull off this blockbuster deal, but it’s clear that they are in win-now mode with Giannis Antetokounmpo in his prime and ready to compete.
