The Mat Ishbia era started off with a bang for the new-look Phoenix Suns, and that trend hasn’t stopped as NBA free agency approaches. Just weeks after firing beloved team coach Monty Williams, the franchise is reportedly leaning toward sending home their starting point guard after years of being together.

According to Chris Haynes, the move will set up CP3 to be a free agent this offseason, where he is expected to receive a number of generous offers.

Paul reportedly plans to play for several more years and is keen to help a team bring home the title.

Paul, 38, played for three seasons with the Suns and led them to varying degrees of success. No doubt, the height of their run came in 2021, when Paul helped them reach the NBA Finals.

Now, he will have the chance to sign elsewhere and try for one final time to raise the Larry O’Brien trophy before it’s all said and done.

Will Chris Paul Go To The Lakers?

After news of Paul’s release hit social media, fans immediately began to speculate where he will join next. While retirement is not out of the question for Paul, the Lakers are one team that almost makes too much sense for the veteran point guard.

Love him or hate him, nobody can deny that Paul is still amazingly effective for his age. In 59 games this past season, he averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 assists on 44% shooting. Those numbers are on the low end for Chris, but they can still help a team in need of a playmaking point guard.

As for where this leaves the Suns, only Mat Ishbia can answer that question. With no point guard and a very thin supporting cast, it’s clear that the Suns plan to be ultra-aggressive in their pursuit of talent around KD and Booker.

Over the next few days and weeks, it’s likely that Paul will take his time to consider all his options before settling on a final decision, but one way or another, you can expect his free agency to be among the biggest stories of the offseason.
