  • Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker are two of the best players in the NBA today
  • NBA fans were asked which duo would win if Tatum was paired with Garnett while Booker was paired with Barkley
  • One duo did end up getting the edge

NBA fans on X were recently asked to make a difficult choice, pick between the star duos of Charles BarkleyDevin Booker, and Kevin Garnett-Jayson Tatum. Fans made strong cases for each duo, but the Boston Celtics’ one had the edge here.

One believes Tatum and Garnett would dominate.

A fan likes the two-man game of Booker and Barkley better.

Tatum and Garnett would be unstoppable, says one fan.

One fan says people don’t remember how great Barkley was and is going with the Phoenix Suns duo.

One fan believes Tatum is better than Booker and that Garnett is better than Barkley, which makes this an easy choice.

This would be an interesting matchup, but a lot of the fans do tend to believe that Tatum and Garnett would emerge victorious. We’ll never know for sure, of course, but a case can be made for either.

The Case For Each Duo

The case for Garnett and Tatum would be that they are much better defensively here. Garnett won Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 while Tatum is a very good defender in his own right.

Barkley, on the other hand, was not really a good defender and would honestly struggle to contain Garnett. Booker, meanwhile, has taken great strides defensively in recent years, but you’d still give the edge to Tatum on that end.

Barkley and Booker would be better on offense, though. They are both elite scorers and would have the edge as playmakers as well. While you’d back Tatum to keep up with their scoring, the same can’t be said for his partner here. Garnett was no slouch on offense, but he was never quite the scorer like the other three here.

If I had to pick one duo, though, I would go with the Celtics one. I think Barkley’s deficiencies on the defensive end would just be too much to overcome. I’d back Garnett to get some stops on him, while Barkley isn’t going to be able to do a whole lot on the other end against the big man. It’d be close, though.

Can Tatum Or Booker Finally Get Over The Line In 2023-24?

Booker’s Suns and Tatum’s Celtics have been two of the best teams in the league in recent seasons, but both have failed to win a title so far. They have taken their teams to the NBA Finals, but lost, with Booker and the Suns losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021 while Tatum and the Celtics lost the following year to the Golden State Warriors.

As for this upcoming season, the Celtics are once again among the favorites in the East, while the Suns are arguably second-favorites in the West behind the Denver Nuggets, the defending champions. I expect both teams to be serious contenders, but there are question marks surrounding both of them.

The Celtics traded away Marcus Smart and landed Kristaps Porzingis, while the Suns parted with Chris Paul for Bradley Beal. Not only do we have to wait and see how well the pieces fit, but the other big concern is that Porzingis and Beal have had their injury issues. You can back Tatum and Booker to dominate, but ultimately, their fate kind of rests on the injury bug.
