22-year-old Patrick Williams still hasn’t found his way with the Chicago Bulls, but it hasn’t stopped him from seeking north of $200 million on his next contract. According to NBA insider Zach Lowe, Williams is looking to secure near-max money as a free agent in 2024.

“I’m hearing Patrick Williams wants big, big numbers for his next contract… like, starts with a 2 and isn’t $20M,” said Lowr speaking on Williams’ looming free agency.

The 6’7″ forward, who was drafted 4th overall in 2020, posted a career-high 10.2 points and 4 rebounds per game last season in 28 minutes. With the stat line of a role-player, it’s wild that Williams seems to think he’s worth $200 million but it’s not uncommon today for players to oversell their value. The only question now is, will the Bulls offer him anything close to that contract, or will they risk letting him try his luck somewhere else?

NBA Fans Are Shocked Over Wild Rumor

For reference, Stephen Curry’s contract contract is for 4 years, $215 million. LeBron James is currently on a two-year, $99 million contract with the Lakers. Obviously, Patrick Williams is nowhere near the level of these superstars and NBA fans had no problem making it known how ridiculous it was to suggest he should be paid on their level.

For some fans, it was tough to see the Bulls even offering a deal like that. With so much uncertainty in Chicago right now, shelling out $200+ million for a guy who averaged 10 points per game at his best is a major gamble.

It remains to be seen if Patrick Williams can complete his goal of securing a $200 million contract next summer, but it’s still possible that he signs for something close that that amount. With more money than ever in the NBA right now, teams have a green light to spend big and take risks where they couldn’t before.  For a team like the Bulls, overpaying Patrick Williams could actually be the move if their aim is to keep the young core together and it wouldn’t be the first time that a team overcommitted to one of their homegrown players.

The situation with Williams, though, is especially complicated. While experts agree that he showed a lot of promise early on, opinions are still mixed on what kind of player he can become. Either way, his ambitions speak to the state of the NBA right now, where even the most unproven role-players can feel confident enough to pursue $200 million.

Chicago Bulls Are A Wild Card In The East

Heading into his fourth season, this will be a big opportunity for Patrick Williams to make a name for himself on the Bulls but they’ll need more than just him to step up if they want to start winning games. After finishing 10th in the East last season, it became clear that the Bulls don’t have enough as presently consulted.

This season, no matter what happens, we can expect Chicago to be very active in trade talks as they consider starting over to rebuild from the ground up. Starting with Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic, all eyes will be on the veteran players if they fail to get off the ground early this season. Meanwhile, for Patrick Williams and the other young guys, this will be their chance to show the world their true worth.
