NBA Insider Reveals Mavs Have No Interest In Dennis Schroder, Questions Why He Rejected $84 Million Contract Offer From The Lakers

Dennis Schroder is yet to find a new team. The former Lakers point guard is a free agent right now and looking for a new team after a difficult season with the purple and gold. The Lakers brought in Schroder to be the replacement for Rajon Rondo, who left to join the Hawks. Schroder had a solid 2019-20 season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, being the runner-up for the NBA Sixth Man Of The Year accolade.

When he joined the Lakers, they immediately offered him a contract extension, which he rejected. The Lakers followed up several times, including a massive $84 million contract spread out across 4 years, but Schroder rejected that contract. He believed that his form with the Lakers could allow him to enter free agency and secure a $100 million contract in the open market.

But things did not go to plan, as Schroder struggled to acclimatize to the Lakers’ style of play. Schroder spent a lot of time on the shelf with minor injuries and COVID. And when he did play, he failed to make an impression on the Lakers’ success. Schroder was extremely poor during the Lakers’ first-round playoff series against the Phoenix Suns.

Because of his bad run with the Los Angeles Lakers, Schroder didn’t immediately re-sign with the franchise. To make things worse, the Lakers decided to upgrade Schroder by acquiring Russell Westbrook. With the starting point guard role filled, the Lakers had no reason to go for Schroder.

Schroder is still a free agent at the moment, as no team has made him an offer good enough for him to put pen to paper. And it appears that one franchise will not be making an offer. The Dallas Mavericks reportedly have no interest in offering Dennis Schroder a contract. NBA insider Marc Stein, who reported this piece of news, also questioned why Schroder turned down the contract the Lakers offer, before noting that things are not looking good for him.

.@TheSteinLine “The Mavs have zero interest in Schroder. It’s staggering that he turned down the 84M offer from the Lakers. This is tough to watch, there’s been so little Schroder discussion. Tough stuff, tough to watch.”

It is entirely possible that Schroder will sign a smaller contract with a different franchise for a short-term period. Despite enduring a difficult season, Schroder is still a solid point guard who is more than capable of creating his own shot. But he will have to lower his demands significantly in order to get a chance with a different franchise next season.
