Bob Cousy Isn’t Optimistic On The Celtics: “It Doesn’t Look Like We’re Going To Be Hanging Banner No. 18 Anytime Soon.”

The Boston Celtics haven’t done well this season, even with the presence of star wings Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Even with their recent win against the New York Knicks, they are only the 10th seed.

Celtics legend Bob Cousy has recently criticized the Boston Celtics when speaking to Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe, claiming that they weren’t going to be “hanging banner No. 18 anytime soon”. It seems as though Cousy believes the problem on the roster is the lack of a point guard. Sam Quinn of CBS Sports relayed the news.

“They should be a lot better than they are,” former Celtics point guard Bob Cousy told the Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy. “It doesn’t look like we’re going to be hanging banner No. 18 any time soon.” The problem, in Cousy’s eyes, is the point guard position.

“I hate to bring it back to a point guard but … you don’t have that control. When we got a lead of 6-8 points, that was when I would take it home. I just would not allow us to lose the lead.”

“They had one in Kyrie [Irving], but he was a head case. They potentially had one in Kemba [Walker], although Kemba was a shooting guard more than a point guard,” Cousy said. “You need a penetrating point guard at that point who is a threat and then he passes off to the [Jayson] Tatums and the [Jaylen] Browns.”

We’ll see if the Boston Celtics do end up getting the point guard that they want. Dennis Schroder is their current point guard, but he is more known for being a scorer rather than a playmaker.

There have been rumors about the Boston Celtics potentially splitting up the Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown duo, but it’s clear that Bob Cousy doesn’t think that either is the issue. It does make sense that a playmaking point guard would be able to optimize Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and perhaps we’ll see the Celtics acquire one in the future.
