Cameron Payne has opened up on the controversial Zion Williamson dunk on Friday night, where the New Orleans Pelicans star went for a late windmill dunk that sent every fan at Smoothie King Center into a frenzy, but not everybody shared that joy with him.

After the game was over, the Suns player went after Zion, starring in a controversial situation where even Willie Green had to be separated from rivals. This was completely unexpected, from Zion’s play to the reaction of the rivals, and even though the player somehow apologized for his actions, the Suns were really upset with him.

This could be the beginning of a good rivalry in the Western Conference, as Jose Alvarado and Chris Paul have been going at it, too, showing that they have no love for each other.

Moreover, Cameron Payne explained why he and his teammates reacted in the way they did, saying that the game was over and Zion didn’t have to do all that extra stuff, which felt like disrespect for the Suns.

“The game was pretty much over, and they just kept playing,” Payne said, via ESPN. “I felt like there was just no sportsmanship, and we don’t really like that. We do the right thing. I felt like they should’ve done the right thing, and they didn’t. We didn’t take it well, and we don’t like to lose either. The game was over, no shot clock. They can hold the ball.”

Some can agree with this reasoning, but not the Pelicans, as CJ McCollum claimed that if the Suns didn’t want to see Zion dunking the ball, they should have been better and gone back to the other side of the ball to prevent Williamson from doing his thing.

“They got to get back on defense if they don’t want us to dunk the ball,” McCollum said. “Get back on defense.”

After last season’s playoff series, these two squads have been ready to go at it. Brandon Ingram also sent a message after the game was over, so you know they are not about to make amends. The Pelicans held onto the 1st seed in the West, while the Suns keep losing to big teams, getting exposed every time.
