Zion Williamson explained the reason behind his vicious dunk against the Phoenix Suns, and it had a lot to do with some pent-up energy.
The Pelicans trounced the Suns 128-117, but the game wasn’t without some drama that unfolded when Williamson loaded up for a late-game windmill slam that ticked off Chris Paul and some of the Suns’ players.
On his part, the forward admitted that it was out of character for him but also added that he wanted to make a statement after Phoenix sent his side packing in the first round of the playoffs last year.
The Williamson-less Pelicans made the playoffs but were unable to fend off the Suns, and the young star said he wanted to prove his point while also saying if it were the other way around with any of the Phoenix stars doing it, he would be okay with it.
Zion Williamson Admits That He “Got Carried Away A Little Bit”
Not the one to mince words, the 22-year-old confessed that he was indeed a bit carried away, and that resulted in the dunk causing a bit of dustup on the floor.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the win, Williamson said the playoff ouster last year played a role in his actions. According to ESPN:
“That was a little out of character for me. But you’ve got to understand, I mean, you can understand it or not. They sent my teammates home last year.”
“I missed all last year. I got carried away a little bit. I admit that. But you know, I was in that locker room when my brothers were down because the Suns sent us home last year. That’s a tough moment to be a part of. So in that moment, I got carried away. I admit that… If they were to do the same thing, I wouldn’t have no problem with it.”
Williamson has been a vital cog in the Pelicans’ top-placed 17-8 run. At the time of writing, he averages 24.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists as New Orleans occupies first place in the Western Conference. The Suns now have a chance to even the score when the two teams face off again on Sunday.
