The Los Angeles Lakers will be sweating over the fitness of their star player Anthony Davis after a leg injury saw him exit the Denver Nuggets clash in the second quarter.

Despite his absence, the Lakers rode on performances from LeBron James (30 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists) and Thomas Bryant (21 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist). Russell Westbrook and Austin Reaves chipped in with 15 and 16 points, respectively to help trounce Denver 126-108.

Reports after the game suggested that Davis was facing some discomfort in his right foot, but there was hope that he did not sustain a severe injury. Coach Darvin Ham said the center received X-rays at the arena and would know more about the status only on Saturday. A recent update said Davis is set to undergo MRI to further know the extent of the injury.

“A source familiar with Davis’ injury told ESPN that Davis is experiencing discomfort in his right foot, but there is hope he did not suffer anything severe. He will likely undergo an MRI for further evaluation.”

Davis subbed out of the game with two minutes remaining in the first quarter and returned in the second, but couldn’t make a massive impact. He finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

How Does Anthony Davis’ Injury Affect The Los Angeles Lakers?

Anthony Davis has been a phenomenon for the Lakers this season. Playing at the five, he’s racked up 27.4 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, playing like the Davis of the old. His consistency lifted Los Angeles from their 0-5 start and put them in a recovery mode with a 12-16 run.

Davis’ scintillating form has seen his name find a spot in the NBA’s updated MVP rankings, but his injury comes as a blow to the team that’s clicking with every game.

There is no doubt that the Lakers, already deprived of shooters, will suffer a dent if their big man, who they are overly reliant on, ends up missing a good stretch of games. But their upcoming schedule isn’t as grueling as their previous one, and given the contributions of their role players, they can afford to miss Davis for a couple of games.

The Lakers play the Washington Wizards at home next, followed by an away clash against the Phoenix Suns.
