LeBron James is currently one of the best superstars in the world, despite him heading towards the end of his career. Many people view him as a top 5 player in the league, and he had a fantastic season despite the Lakers struggling as a whole.

Currently, he is on an expiring contract, but LeBron James will have the opportunity to sign an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers on August 4th. He could potentially add $97 million over two years to his contract. Jordan Greer of The Sporting News relayed the news.

James is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Lakers on Thursday, Aug. 4. It could be a one-year extension worth $47 million or a two-year extension worth $97 million. (There isn’t a hard deadline on that deal. It could stay on the table until the start of next year’s free agency period.)

The 37-year-old is currently only under contract through the 2022-23 season. He originally signed a four-year, $153.5 million with the Lakers in 2018, then agreed to a two-year, $85.6 million extension in 2020 after Los Angeles won the NBA championship.

It remains to be seen if LeBron James does end up signing an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. A recent report suggested that LeBron James is happy on the Lakers, so perhaps that means he will sign that extension after all.

“Sources briefed on the matter stress that James is extremely happy in Los Angeles despite the Lakers’ back-to-back rocky seasons,” Stein wrote. “He and his family, by all accounts, have grown increasingly entrenched in Southern California since James signed with the Lakers in the summer of 2018.”

The Los Angeles Lakers could potentially be a playoff team once again next season with LeBron James and Anthony Davis at the helm. Hopefully, the changes they made to the roster surrounding their superstars are enough to make the team competitive.

LeBron James may not be in his prime any longer, but there’s no doubt that he can still lead a team to the championship. Perhaps he will be able to do so next season, especially if the Lakers make more moves to help him.
