Brandon Jennings has come under fire for his comments on Jayson Tatum, with Patrick Beverley the latest to blast him for it. On a live stream of The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone, Beverley disagreed with Jennings calling Tatum the softest Boston Celtics superstar ever and claimed he thought the guard was soft when they faced off.
“Just because he’s not yelling and you can see his tattoos, don’t mean he’s soft,” Beverley said. “He’s skilled as f***. I think he’s talented as f***. He has a ton of size, he has won a championship. They might be one of the winningest organizations probably the last four years.
“No, I’m not rolling with that,” Beverley continued. “That’s a bad take. He doesn’t look like the normal tough guy doesn’t mean he’s not tough. He gets it done. When I guarded Brandon Jennings, I was like, ‘Yeah, soft a**.'”
That was a savage shot. These two only ever played against each other thrice in their careers, with Beverley winning two of those meetings. Jennings struggled in them too, as he averaged 9.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 0.3 steals per game and shot 28.1% from the field. It might explain why Beverley, who currently plays for Hapoel Tel Aviv, doesn’t hold him in very high regard.
With Jennings having never been one to shy away from a war of words, it will be interesting to see how he reacts to this. Perhaps Beverley might make an appearance on Gil’s Arena, which is where all this began. In an episode earlier this month, Jennings wondered if Tatum is the softest Celtics superstar ever.
“Is he the softest Boston Celtics superstar ever? … If you’re so tough, why you didn’t get Finals MVP last year? Why’d you let your running mate do it? … I think I’ll be more afraid of Jaylen Brown than Jayson Tatum,” Jennings said.
It was an odd argument from Jennings and he has been criticized for it from all corners. He should probably just admit he was in the wrong but that’s unlikely to happen, to say the least.
Jayson Tatum Reacted To Brandon Jennings Calling Him The Softest Celtics Superstar Ever
Tatum isn’t the type to respond to criticism but he did to Jennings with a post on Instagram. When asked about that post and the comments, Tatum had the perfect response.
“No. I wasn’t mad… I think it comes with being one of the best players in the league. The more you accomplish, the more it gives people the opportunity to nitpick at things.”
“If I wasn’t who I was or had a certain status, people would probably not talk about me as much. I’m not the first superstar in the league history to do this. I think I can come to it.”
Players should take criticism as somewhat of a badge of honor. No ex-player or media member would really bother taking a shot at them if they weren’t relevant enough.
Tatum is undoubtedly one of the best players in the NBA and soft is certainly not a word that should be associated with him. The 26-year-old is averaging 27.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2024-25 and has led the Celtics to a 29-12 record.
