For the first time in seemingly forever, the Sacramento Kings look like they will be a factor in the business end of the season. For years, the Kings had been somewhat of a laughing stock, and it seemed like it might continue to be the case for the foreseeable future when they traded away Tyrese Haliburton earlier this year.
Haliburton shone for the Indiana Pacers right away and took a shot at the Kings last month by saying he was with an organization with zero culture. He was right on point about his time with the Kings, but it is safe to say that the franchise has turned things around. The Kings are the fifth seed in the Western Conference with a 14-11 record, and it appears they want to make some moves to ensure they keep trending upward.
via NBC Sports:
“Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus reported Sunday, citing sources, that the Kings are among four teams keeping an eye on Kuzma — along with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns.”
“Sacramento has been interested in Kuzma in the past, as the 6-foot-9 forward was in the middle of trade rumors involving the Kings sending Buddy Hield to Los Angeles.”
“Anunoby, in his sixth season with the Toronto Raptors, is a defensive monster who also can put the ball in the basket. In 26 games this season, Anunoby is averaging 19.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 36.7 minutes. He currently leads the NBA with 62 total steals and is shooting 47.5 percent from the field. Anunoby is under contract through next season and has a $19.9 million player option for 2024-25.”
“Siakam, a teammate of Anunoby’s in Toronto, is off to a fantastic start this season averaging a career-high 25.3 points and 8.9 rebounds. His deal doesn’t expire until after the 2023-24 campaign.”
The Kings currently have the longest playoff drought in all of the major American sports leagues at 16 seasons. If they manage to pull off a move for Pascal Siakam, Kyle Kuzma, or OG Anunoby, you have to fancy their chances of making it this time around.
The Kings Have Been An Incredibly Fun Team To Watch
It is always great when a downtrodden franchise starts becoming relevant again, and the Kings are winning over a lot of people with their play. They rank second in the league at 118.0 PPG and rank sixth in offensive rating at 115.0.
The likes of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are balling, while Kevin Huerter has proven to be a shrewd acquisition as well. The Kings have been lighting the beam an awful lot this season, and it would be fantastic if they can keep this up.
