With things going south in Utah, rumors indicate Rudy Gobert could be on the chopping block. As a 2x defensive player of the year, his acquisition could change the trajectory for many teams in the NBA.

In the latest report, Chicago has emerged as a potential landing spot for the All-Star big man.

The Trade: Rudy Gobert and Ed Davis for Otto Porter Jr., Lauri Markkanen, Chandler Hutchison and a 2020 first-round pick.

Gobert, of course, is about as defensive-minded as it gets. Chicago would have a number of questions elsewhere on the roster, but it’d have an established defensive identity.

For the Jazz, this deal would represent a cultural shift. Gobert has been the centerpiece of their success for over half a decade. Largely because of his defense, Utah has been plus-5.6 points per 100 possessions with him on the floor compared to minus-1.1 with him off.

Donovan Mitchell is obviously the centerpiece of the franchise. At 23-years-old, he has emerged as a star shooting guard and one of the brightest young players in the league. By trading for Porter and Markkanen, they’d get younger. and deeper in the frontcourt with guys who play on both ends of the floor.

Chicago, meanwhile, needs help defensively. A guy like Gobert, who has been the league’s best interior defender for half a decade, would be a perfect fit with the team.

It remains to be seen how the situation in Utah will play out, but a deal could this could radically change the NBA for years to come. For Chicago especially, this is the kind of thing that could help them return to title contention.
