The Golden State Warriors are considered one of the biggest factors heading into the February trade deadline. The Warriors are struggling on the court this season and have been linked with trade targets like Pascal Siakam.
Senior NBC Insider Kurt Helin has reported that the Warriors will likely wait and see how the team plays after the return of Draymond Green, with major changes likely taking place next offseason instead of before the trade deadline.
“The most likely outcome for Golden State at the deadline is they stand pat, try to get healthy, see how much better things look with Draymond Green back, and then make some hard choices come the summer.”
With Chris Paul breaking his hand and being ruled out for four to six weeks, CP3 will likely return after the February 8 trade deadline has come and gone. The team probably fancies its chances of making a run into the playoffs with its full squad available instead of upsetting the current status quo by making major trades.
Targets like Pascal Siakam will also need to be given a long-term contract extension along with trades taking young assets away from Golden State. The 2024 offseason will give them more flexibility to pivot in one direction or the other.
Warriors Unwilling To Give Up On Jonathan Kuminga
After Jonathan Kuminga’s recent expression of frustration with Steve Kerr, many are quick to assume that Kuminga will be leaving the franchise as soon as the Warriors find a good trade for him. If there’s a deal for Siakam or Lauri Markkanen, Kuminga will. be the piece teams will want. Helin also reported that the Warriors do not want to trade Kuminga and look at him as a crucial pillar of their future.
“Still, according to multiple sources, the Warriors are loathe to trade Kuminga, who is seen as a potential star who can help them win now and in the future, the rare piece on the roster who can help Golden State both support Steph Curry in the present and transition to a successful post-Curry future, should it ever come.”
Kuminga is averaging 12.8 points and 4.1 rebounds this season and is being given a bigger role after his complaints the other day. He led the Warriors in minutes for the team’s win over the Pistons. It’ll be interesting to see how his minutes are impacted upon Draymond’s return, as both players are in the same position.
Kuminga could get moved to being a wing and starting alongside Green, especially with Andrew Wiggins’ poor form. Green was averaging 9.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists before his suspension, while Wiggins is averaging 12.2 points and 4.3 rebounds. It’s time for Kuminga to solidify his role as a starter.
The Warriors are 17-18 and are currently trailing by 20 points at halftime against the Raptors.
