In the aftermath of a highly disappointing season, the Los Angeles Lakers are re-thinking the capabilities of their roster.

As reported by various sources, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook are almost guaranteed to return next season. Talen Horton-Tucker, despite some rumblings, is also likely to remain a Laker unless they get an All-Star caliber player in return.

On Monday, ESPN dropped the latest update on THT’s future:

The Lakers are reportedly considering Talen Horton-Tucker untouchable unless they can build a package around him to get an All-Star caliber player.

Horton-Tucker, who turned 21 in November, has shown flashes of his potential over the years. As a young and explosive guard, he was one of the few players who managed to stick around after the 2020 title run.

While GM/President Rob Pelinka clearly values him highly, it might be in the team’s best interest to move him for better-fitting players. One example is a trade with the Heat for veteran shooter Kyle Lowry and other high-quality role players:

Los Angeles Lakers receive: Kyle Lowry, Max Strus, and Duncan Robinson

Miami Heat receive: Russell Westbrook and Talen Horton-Tucker

While there is a lot of fantasizing in La La Land about what the Lakers can add this off-season to return to contention next season. Regrettably, there isn’t a lot of flexibility in this team with the assets that they have, unless they trade Anthony Davis away for a new nucleus that a 38-year-old LeBron James will be tasked to carry next season. With the things that the Lakers have been looking for, this possible trade with the Miami Heat gives them everything they need.

Whatever the Lakers decide to do this offseason, it will have major implications for the next season. As James gets older, and Anthony Davis’ durability continues to be a major question, L.A. will have to move carefully and boldly if they want to keep up with the evolving Western Conference.

In one way or another, Talen Horton-Tucker will help them achieve their goals and return to a state of contention.
