Power forward Zion Williamson is one of the best players in the league when healthy, and he is widely considered to be the face of the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the team has repeatedly been held back by his injuries.
When speaking on a Summer League broadcast, NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed that the New Orleans Pelicans are willing to trade Zion Williamson for the right package. Francisco Rosa of Bleacher Report relayed the news.
“While appearing on an NBA Summer League broadcast Friday night, Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes reported that Williamson could still be dealt if it is to the right situation and for a good enough package.”
“‘Not saying he was clearly available but Zion can be had,’ Haynes said.”
There’s no doubt that moving Zion Williamson would require a monster return for the New Orleans Pelicans. They would need a quality prospect to build around alongside Brandon Ingram, as well as ample draft compensation.
Still, the best move for the New Orleans Pelicans is to try and bank on Zion Williamson staying healthy. He is a dominant force when he plays: last season, he averaged 26.0 PPG, 7.6 RPG, and 4.6 APG while shooting 60.8% from the field. Williamson can be the No. 1 option on a championship team, and ultimately, that is the goal.
The New Orleans Pelicans Preferred To Trade Zion Williamson For Scoot Henderson, Not Brandon Ingram
This summer, the New Orleans Pelicans were heavily linked with Scoot Henderson. It was known that the team needed to trade one of their stars to make the deal happen, and reportedly, they preferred to move Zion Williamson in that scenario rather than Brandon Ingram.
“I heard this week from one well-placed observer who is convinced that the Pelicans would indeed consider dealing Williamson away if it meant they could draft Henderson, pointing to a rising level of exasperation within the organization regarding Williamson’s ongoing availability issues and overall approach. My read, at this juncture, is that the Pelicans are less inclined to consider trading Brandon Ingram in the same scenario.”
Ultimately, the New Orleans Pelicans decided to stick with their core, rather than shaking things up. Hopefully, this decision pays off for them, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
