Dallas Mavericks superstar Anthony Davis has been frequently mentioned in recent trade rumors. While there have been contradictory reports regarding the big man’s availability in trade conversations, SportsNet New York’s Ian Begley suggested that the New York Knicks could emerge as potential suitors for the former NBA champion.
“I’m sure the Knicks would at least check in with Dallas if/when Anthony Davis becomes available,” Begley said. “You may scoff at the idea, but the Knicks want to win a title this season. If Dallas is offering Davis at a below-market cost, I’m sure the Knicks will at least give the move some thought.”
Begley’s rationale seems sound. The New York Knicks underwent some significant changes in the offseason. With Mike Brown taking over, the Knicks effectively changed their playing style to improve their chances and capitalize on the opportunity in front of them this season.
Despite their offseason changes and the heavy investment in their core, the Knicks have looked ordinary. With a 9-6 record following their latest 133-126 loss to the Orlando Magic, it is evident that they have struggled with consistency. On this note, implying that an upgrade could be necessary is justified.
When healthy, Davis is one of the premier big men in the NBA. Before his injury this season, he was averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game on 52.0% shooting from the field.
While stats like these would indicate that Davis could be an impactful player for New York, the Knicks may face some challenges in acquiring him.
How Can The Knicks Acquire Anthony Davis?
With Dallas rumored to be considering a rebuild, many teams are expected to show an interest in Anthony Davis. At the current juncture, the Mavericks also seem willing to listen to trade offers for their superstar.
This is a promising sign for the Knicks. While the team boasts an impressive offensive rating of 119.7, their defensive rating of 114.8 is 18th in the league. Hence, acquiring a gifted two-way big man such as Davis would be significant.
To land Davis, New York may have to craft a package that aligns with Dallas’ future plans. Given that they intend to build around the core of Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, the Knicks could take two distinct approaches.
One approach would involve a direct swap – Anthony Davis for Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns’ massive $53.1 million contract could be offset against Davis’ $54.1 million deal. When also considering Towns’ defensive shortcomings, the Knicks may see enough reason to offload him and bring in a more reliable anchor with championship experience.
Alternatively, the Knicks can package OG Anunoby, Mitchell Robinson, Tyler Kolek, and their 2026 top-8 protected first-round pick via Washington in exchange for Anthony Davis.
This offer may align more closely with the Mavs’ plans. Anunoby offers wing depth, Robinson becomes a solid defensive presence in the big man rotation, Kolek offers solid playmaking as a backup point guard, and a potential first-round pick next year puts Dallas in a much better position to rebuild.
Although this deal favors the Mavericks, it may not be reasonable for the Knicks. Both Anunoby and Robinson have been crucial for the Knicks thus far. Additionally, given the inherent risks associated with Davis, due to his health and uncertain availability, New York may not be too willing to pay a premium price.
