New Blockbuster Trade Idea: Pistons Land Joel Embiid For A Price That 76ers Couldn’t Refuse

With Joel Embiid shut down for the season and the 76ers spiraling into chaos, Detroit could swoop in with an offer too tempting to refuse. Here's how the Pistons could land the former MVP and go from an average playoff squad to legitimate contenders.

Joel Embiid’s season is over after he was shut down, and so, it seems, is the Philadelphia 76ers’ last shred of hope. With Embiid reportedly eyeing a Kobe-like procedure to fix his knees and the Sixers considering a medical retirement to erase his contract, the Process looks dead and buried. Tyrese Maxey’s been left to carry a broken roster, while Paul George appears more interested in podcasting than playing. This isn’t just a team in trouble—it’s one that’s about to be detonated.

Enter the Detroit Pistons, a team suddenly lurking in the playoff race thanks to Cade Cunningham’s breakout, Jaden Ivey’s scoring punch, and Ausar Thompson’s do-it-all versatility. While the Pistons are no one’s idea of a contender, they’ve got the pieces to make Philly an offer they’d be crazy to refuse.

A bold move for Embiid would instantly vault Detroit from lottery regulars to serious players in the East while giving Philly the chance to finally cut its losses and start fresh. It’s a blockbuster that feels as inevitable as it does shocking—here’s why both sides should pull the trigger.

Proposed Trade Details

Detroit Pistons Receive: Joel Embiid

Philadelphia 76ers Receive: Jalen Duren, Ron Holland, Isaiah Stewart, 2027 First-Round Pick (DET), 2028 First-Round Pick (DET)

Pistons Take A Risk To Become A Talented Powerhouse In East

The Detroit Pistons have been stuck at the bottom of the East for what feels like an eternity, but a blockbuster trade for Joel Embiid could change that overnight. Pairing the 2023 MVP with Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson would instantly give Detroit one of the most intriguing cores in the league.

Cade’s improved play as an All-Star (25.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 9.4 APG) would blend perfectly with Embiid’s dominant inside presence. Ivey’s explosiveness, evidenced by his 17.6 points per game on 40.9% from deep, adds a necessary scoring punch, while Thompson’s defensive versatility and 9.8 points per game round out a starting lineup that could terrorize the East.

Of course, the risk here is enormous. Embiid’s health is the elephant in the room; the big man has missed significant time yet again, and whispers of a Kobe-like surgery to salvage his knees are anything but reassuring. Detroit would be gambling its future on Embiid’s body holding up—a risk they seem willing to take given their long-term rebuild. But if the gamble pays off, the Pistons would be a legitimate threat in the East.

76ers Move On From Embiid And Start A Rebuild Around Tyrese Maxey

The writing’s been on the wall in Philly. Joel Embiid’s latest injury setback and whispers of a potential medical retirement have pushed the 76ers to the brink of a full-scale rebuild. Moving Embiid would be painful, but with Tyrese Maxey proving he can be more than just a sidekick, it might be time to cut bait.

Maxey’s breakout campaign—26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game—has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise miserable season. Building around the 24-year-old guard, who’s taken a leap as both a scorer and playmaker, gives Philly a path forward that doesn’t involve holding its breath every time Embiid hits the floor.

Trading Embiid to Detroit would net the 76ers a haul of young talent and draft capital, exactly what they need to kickstart a proper rebuild. Getting back a package centered around Jalen Duren, Ron Holland, Isaiah Stewart, and multiple first-round picks would allow Philly to strip down to the studs and start fresh.

It also frees up cap space to go shopping in a loaded 2026 free-agent class, where Philly could potentially add a star to pair with Maxey. Considering the alternative—another year of trying to prop up an injured Embiid—Daryl Morey might not hesitate to push the button.

A Very Realistic Blockbuster Trade Idea

In the end, a trade sending Joel Embiid to Detroit might be exactly what both teams need at this crossroads. For the Pistons, it’s a high-risk, high-reward move that could finally bring them back to relevance in the Eastern Conference. Pairing Embiid with Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson would instantly raise their ceiling and turn Detroit into a legitimate playoff contender—if not more.

The health concerns surrounding Embiid are real, but with a core, this young and talented, Detroit can afford to gamble on a superstar who can single-handedly shift the balance of power in the East. For a franchise that’s been spinning its wheels for years, this move would signal an end to the rebuild and the start of something far more exciting.

For the 76ers, moving on from Embiid would be a painful but necessary step toward a proper rebuild centered around Tyrese Maxey. Securing a haul of young players and draft picks would allow Philadelphia to retool quickly and decisively, avoiding the dreaded middle ground of mediocrity.

While it’s a tough pill to swallow for a fanbase that’s invested so much in “The Process,” hitting the reset button now might be the only way to escape the cycle of injuries and playoff disappointments that have defined the Embiid era.
