The Golden State Warriors were busy on trade deadline day, acquiring Jimmy Butler in a stunning five-team deal. The Warriors parted with Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, and Lindy Waters III in the deal and on Thursday, put out one Instagram post thanking all three men. That didn’t sit well with Schroder, who wanted a solo farewell post.

“Wasn’t even worth my own post huh? thx too tho.”

Well, if Anderson and Waters, who had been with the team longer, weren’t getting a solo post, then you weren’t either Schroder. The German’s Warriors tenure lasted just under two months and it certainly wasn’t a memorable one.

The Warriors acquired Schroder from the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 15 as they needed a replacement for De’Anthony Melton, who had suffered a partially torn left ACL. The 31-year-old was to provide a new wrinkle to the offense but just never got going.

Schroder averaged 10.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game for the Warriors while shooting 37.5% from the field and 32.2% from beyond the arc. To say he was struggling might be an understatement and it’s not a surprise that the team was fine with cutting ties with him.

The Warriors initially traded Schroder to the Miami Heat, who rerouted him to the Utah Jazz. The Jazz then moved him to the Detroit Pistons as part of that five-team deal.

So, just days after Schroder compared the NBA’s trade deadline to modern slavery, he was moved three times that day. The timing is quite something. Schroder doesn’t appear to have seen this coming, as NBA insider Marc J. Spears reported he had signed a lease in San Francisco.

“Crazy 18 hours for vet Dennis Schröder. Schröder works out pregame with Warriors in Utah last night and is pulled out of showers to be told of trade to Jazz. He recently signed a lease in SF and expected to stay at GS. Jazz don’t want Schröder. Now Schröder is heading to Detroit.”

While Schroder would have been disappointed to be traded, he told Spears that he is looking forward to playing for the Pistons.

“It’s great to be in the best league in the world. New opportunity to go out there and help a team make the playoffs!”

The Pistons are 26-26 on the season and have a good chance of making the playoffs in the East. If Schroder plays as well as he did for the Nets at the start of the season, he’d greatly help in their quest to end this long playoff drought.

As for the Warriors, they’re hoping that Butler changes their fortunes. They’re 25-26 on the season and you’re at great risk of missing the playoffs in the West if you finish around .500.

You’d expect the Warriors to be better with Butler but this still doesn’t look like a team that can compete for a championship. They might win a playoff series or maybe even two but that’s about it. We are likely to see Butler in action for the Warriors for the first time on Saturday when they take on the Chicago Bulls at the United Center at 8 PM ET.
