Stephen Curry returned from injury following a two-game absence in the Golden State Warriors‘ 111-95 win over the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center on Friday. Curry had been out with a pelvic contusion due to a hard fall in a game against the Toronto Raptors, and he spoke about that incident and his injury postgame.

“It just reminded me of 21 when I fell into the stairs in Houston,” Curry said. “Thankfully, I didn’t break anything or have any bone damage. It is mostly just a deep, serious contusion that I’ll feel it for a while, but I can play, and I can’t make it worse as long as I don’t land on it again.”

Curry was referring to when he fell on a metal step in the bench area during a game against the Houston Rockets on March 17, 2021. He suffered a hairline fracture that day, but this injury wasn’t nearly as serious.

While Curry was able to return soon enough, he didn’t play all that well against the Pelicans. The 37-year-old finished with 23 points (7-21 FG), four rebounds, six assists, and three steals on the night. When asked in this press conference if his back was bothering him, Curry denied that was the case.

“Nah, it didn’t bother,” Curry stated. “I [am] just aware of it, and I don’t know how long it’ll take, but as long as I feel like I did tonight and don’t have any other incidences where I fall on it, I should be fine.”

You feared the worst when Curry fell in the game against the Raptors. You could hear the impact of the fall, and the 11-time All-Star had already been dealing with a back issue in the days leading up to the game. A long absence looked to be potentially on the cards, but fortunately that wasn’t the case.

As long as Curry avoids another fall, he should be fine moving forward. While an injury, even a minor one, is never good news, there might be a silver lining to it.

After a loss to the Denver Nuggets on March 17, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr had stated Curry was tired after carrying the team for a month. This injury led to the two-time MVP getting a week off, and that might prove beneficial in the postseason.

The Warriors snapped their two-game losing streak with this win over the Pelicans and improved to 42-31 this season. They are seventh in the Western Conference and are desperately trying to avoid the NBA Play-In Tournament.

The Warriors are tied with the Clippers for the sixth-best record in the Conference at the moment, but are a spot below them on tiebreaker after losing each of the first three meetings between the sides this season. These teams face each other in their final regular-season game, and that could well end up deciding who finishes in the top six.

For now, though, the Warriors will be focusing on their next game against the San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center on Sunday at 7 PM ET.
